Moooi was established in 2001 by the creative designer Mark Wanders and the astute marketer Casper Vissers. The extra “o” in “mooi”, the Dutch word for beauty, stands for the core value of the brand name. That is, the beauty they want to add to every room with their designs.
The Dutch brand name is enjoying international success with their bold designs. They also work with big names, such as Maarten Baas, Bertjan Pot, Jurgen Bey and Joep van Lieshout.
It’s worth mentioning that Moooi lamps often give a retro impression. In fact, many of the collections are based on traditional and classical forms. The designers rework recognisable elements into a modern form. This results in a classic but bold appearance!
A design that illustrates this is the Horse Lamp. Here, a conventional lampshade is combined with the sculpture of a horse, which results in a very surprising design! Other popular designs are the Kaipo lamp and the Paper Chandelier. When you look at these lamps, you immediately understand the point made above.
Different Moooi designs have been awarded prizes in recent years. For example, in 2007, Moooi won the “Elle Deco International Design Award” with the Paper Chandelier, a chandelier made out of papier-mâché. In 2014, we felicitated Moooi with the “Best lighting Brand Award” for their Prop Light, designed by Bertjan Pot.
The Moooi Smoke Chandelier is also a remarkable design. This chandelier is made from burnt wood and you can admire it in several respected museums.
